Scene: Olivia's base. [ Enter Olivia and Malvolio, together, and Toby, opposite. ] Toby: My lady, there is a ship on approach, recommending landing permission. Malvolio: Thou meanst requesting, imbecile, not recommending. Toby: I said as much. He answered that he was landing, and recommended that we cleared the way. Olivia: What ship is this? From Orsino, is it? Toby: I know not, my lady, But it is a similar flier. Olivia: Has thou warned him off? Toby: I have, my lady, but he insists that he see you in person. Olivia: He doesn't know about the defence grid! We must warn him! Hail him! Malvolio: No response! Olivia: Again! Malvolio: Still no response! Toby: Give him a chance to answer! [ Olivia and Malvolio look at Toby ] Toby: Well, he might be in the bath, or something. Malvolio: [pauses, glares at Toby ] Still no response. Approaching the defence grid. [sounds of anti-aircraft batteries. lots of destruction] Olivia: I wonder who it was. Toby: Perhaps he made it through. Malvolio: No chance. I designed the grid myself. [sound of an approaching ship landing, then footsteps, then finally a normal, bog-standard house-hold doorbell.] [enter Anna] Anna: A gentleman to see you, my lady, from Captain Orsino. Olivia: I will not see anyone from Orsino. I care not if he is Blake himself--- [enter Jenna] Jenna: My name is Cesario, my lady. I bring you a message from Orsino. Olivia: [staring at jenna in shock] I will receive this message in private. [ exit Toby, Malvolio and Anna ] Olivia: Thy name is Cesario, you say? Well then, "Cesario", give me your message. Jenna: My message is from Orsino. He bids you join with him for mutual benefit and profit, now that the federation is undone. Olivia: O that pirate! That scoundrel! He cares nothing for liberty, only for milking opportunity for his own gain. Once he was a good man, part of the resistance, but he lost hope. I could no more give support to him than I could to the Terra Nostra. [aside] But wait! Blake himself brings this message, under false designation. what means this? Is Orsino's selfishness merely a cover? Or is Blake testing me? Oh, what should I do? [to Jenna] tell me, "Cesario", what dost thou think of Orsino's proposal? Jenna: [aside] Methinks she believes me Blake, and asks his advice? I must answer in kind. What would Blake do? He'd argue with Avon! No help, no help. He'd be hard, giving a response with moral weight, but no practical use. But what? I have it! [ to Olivia ] If you are fighting for liberty, you must be free to make your own choice. I cannot help you. Olivia: [aside] It is a test! It is! Blake seeks to determine my resolve! O me! [to Jenna] I cannot help one interested only in exploitation, as Orsino appears to be. An he wish my help, it must be towards freedom. I think. Jenna: I will convey your response, my lady. [exit] Olivia: Who'd have thought to see the day: A living legend come my way. Thy commanding voice, thy curly head, Thy prowess, doubtless, in thy bed. This meagre band, such pains to raise, Would I gladly give up the reins. If my men you consent to lead, Then Illyria will be freed. [ Exeunt. ]
